Edinburgh, İskoçya'nın 1437 yılından beri başkentidir. Glasgow'dan sonra ülkenin ikinci büyük kenti olan Edinburgh, İskoçya'nın doğusunda, kuzey denizine yakın bir konumdadır. Avrupa'nın en güzel görünümlü kentlerinden biri olarak kabul edilen şehir, Orta Çağ ve Georgian dönemlerine ait mimarisiyle bilinmektedir. Edinburgh Üniversitesi ve İskoç Aydınlanması'nın etkisiyle yükselen kültür düzeyi ile bununla beraber yeni oluşan ve klasik tarzdaki "New Town"'ın (Yeni Şehir) mimarisi, Edinburgh'a "Kuzeyin Atinası" unvanını kazandırdı. Kayaların üstüne kurulu olan ve tarihî şehirle, şehrin ana caddesi Royal Mile'a hakim bir konumda bulunan şatosu başta olmak üzere birçok tarihi ve turistik özelliğe sahiptir. Şehrin "Old Town" ve "New Town" bölgeleri UNESCO Dünya Miras Listesi'ndedir.
